Married in 1987, Chuck and Joann had been sailing together on Chuck's boat in southern Ohio and Indiana. They moved up to cruising boats with a Catalina 30 moored in Sandusky, Ohio and began sailing the islands and bays of western Lake Erie. Before long another boat upgrade had them cruising on "Blue Horizon", their brand new Tartan 37 which took them to Lake Huron's North Channel for several month long cruises, as well as through a complete circumnavigation of four of the Great Lakes. They were awarded the Great Lakes Cruising Club's Admiral Bayfield Award recognizing their five lake cruises. They even survived a man-overboard experience together, Joann hauling Chuck from the chilly waters off Ontario's shore. You can read about their experience on page 8 of the September 2007 GLCC Lifeline Magazine. "Moku Hale" is their newest Tartan, a 43 footer they delivered in a November 2011 sail to Sandusky Bay. The Meads introduced "Moku Hale" to cruising by sailing her on an extended cruise from Lake Erie to and throughout the North Channel of Lake Huron in 2012.
