The third session in GLCC School’s four-part Marine Weather Essentials series delves into large-scale surface weather patterns.

The wind and weather conditions that you encounter during your outings on the Great Lakes are governed by the passage of low and high pressure systems. We will examine the life-cycle and structure of a low pressure system, including cold, warm, stationary, and occluded fronts. You will also learn the type of weather to expect with the passage of a low pressure system, and how surface weather charts can be used to tell how fast and in what direction weather systems are moving relative to your position.
