Up From the Briny Depths

The recent discovery of a steamer loaded with salt brought to the surface the importance of Great Lakes salt production to the world. Piping up from a 400 million year old ocean deep beneath the Earth, salt manufacturers found high quality minerals in New York and Michigan. Over 70 ships were lost carrying salt to markets like Superior, Wisconsin and Chicago.

Ric Mixter logs thousands of miles each year as one of the most requested Great Lakes historians. From archive footage to new underwater images of shipwrecks, Ric’s moving picture library is unmatched across the Great Lakes region. In this webinar, Ric explores how the salt was discovered and dives several wrecks, including the Adella Shores, Herman Hettler and Miztec, to provide GLCC school viewers insight into how fortunes were made and lost.
